Parco Ort9-Sergio Albani

The urban gardens Parco Ort9-Sergio Albani are an urban redevelopment initiative promoted by active citizens and created in 2017 by the association VivereIn… aps thanks to the EU Project SIDIGMED (ENPI CBCMED Programme) and under the supervision of the City of Rome with the overall aim of improving the quality of life and the livability of the territory.

Description

The community gardens area Parco Ort9-Sergio Albani is an urban redevelopment initiative promoted by active citizens and created in 2017 by the association VivereIn... aps with the overall aim of improving the quality of life in the area and the livability of the territory.

The area has an extension of 12,500 m2 in which 4,000 m2 are used for vegetable plots (98 plots of 36 m2 and 9 plots of 48 m2);  4 “piazza” have been created for socializing and studying, together with shelters for shade, a wooden house (which can be booked online for free), a container for tools and toilets. The area created with the vegetable plots and fenced is owned by the City of Rome, given on free loan to the association VivereIn... aps, following a Public Notice, for the duration of 6 years +renewable for another 6 years.

The Association Vivere In aps  was established in 2014 as a result of the enthusiasm and commitment of citizens to improbe the quality of life in their neighbourhood. The association is defined by the Statute, the assembly elects the President and the Board of Directors, everyone can participate in the decision-making process in the ways and times established by the Statute.

The community gardens area is the result of an urban redevelopment action by the members of the association that turned a brownfield and a situation of severe degradation on public land into a usable terrain with tangible improvements in terms of quality of life and of the territory.

The area meets the needs of the gardeners, who look after their plot dedicated to growing vegetables, and the needs of the residents of the neighbourhood such as the use of a common “piazza”, a meeting place for all residents in the area to enjoy all sorts of community activities.

Innovative actions have been implemented to improve services and manage them remotely, such as the installation of inverters for irrigation and control units for centralized remote management, fertigation system and cleaning of drip lines with Venturi system. Furthermore, all the actions applied comply with the principle of environmental-social-economic sustainability.
